Many people spend their lives pursuing success, only to discover that achievement alone doesn’t guarantee fulfillment. Others focus exclusively on personal happiness and struggle to find a deeper sense of purpose. Some prioritize their faith but wrestle with questions about ambition, wealth, and professional growth.

Is it possible to pursue all three?

On a recent episode of the UIF Community Podcast, we had the privilege of speaking with the late Dr. Yaqub Mirza: a physicist, entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, author, and community leader whose life’s work demonstrates that faith, success, and happiness do not have to compete with one another.

Dr. Mirza was the co-founder of Sterling Management Group, served on the boards of several prominent organizations, including UIF and AMANA Funds, and spent decades supporting Islamic institutions and charitable initiatives around the world.

His journey offers valuable lessons for entrepreneurs, professionals, students, and anyone seeking a more purposeful life.

Success Is More Than a Financial Metric

In today’s culture, success is often reduced to a number. A salary. A business valuation. A property portfolio. A social media following.

While financial achievement can certainly create opportunities, Dr. Mirza’s life illustrates that true success extends beyond wealth accumulation.

Throughout his career, he built businesses, invested in companies, and helped create opportunities for others. Yet his legacy is equally tied to the institutions he helped strengthen, the causes he supported, and the people he mentored along the way.

This broader definition of success challenges a common misconception that professional achievement and community impact exist on opposite ends of the spectrum. In reality, some of the most influential leaders view their careers as a vehicle for serving something greater than themselves.

Faith Should Shape Our Ambitions, Not Limit Them

Many Muslims wrestle with an unnecessary tension between worldly success and spiritual growth.

Some assume that pursuing business opportunities, wealth creation, or professional advancement somehow distracts from religious commitment. Others become so focused on material goals that their faith gradually becomes an afterthought.

Dr. Mirza’s example offers a different perspective.

As a scientist, entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist, he spent decades operating in highly competitive environments while remaining deeply connected to his Islamic values. His career demonstrated that faith and ambition are not mutually exclusive. Instead, faith can serve as the foundation that guides how success is pursued and how its rewards are ultimately used.

When values drive decision-making, success becomes about more than personal gain. It becomes a tool for creating positive change, supporting communities, and leaving behind a meaningful legacy.

The Importance of Thinking Long-Term

One of the defining characteristics of successful entrepreneurs and investors is the ability to think beyond immediate results.

In a world focused on instant gratification, long-term thinking has become increasingly rare. Yet nearly every meaningful accomplishment – whether building a business, raising a family, developing expertise, or strengthening one’s faith – requires patience. The most valuable opportunities often take years to develop.

The strongest institutions are rarely built overnight. The greatest impact frequently comes from small, consistent actions repeated over long periods of time.

Dr. Mirza’s career reflects this principle. His accomplishments spanned decades, not months. They were the result of sustained effort, disciplined decision-making, and a willingness to invest in outcomes that may not produce immediate rewards.

Why Giving Back Is Part of Prosperity

One of the most inspiring aspects of Dr. Mirza’s story was his commitment to philanthropy and community development.

For many people, charitable giving is viewed as something that happens after success has been achieved. Once the business grows. Once retirement arrives. Once there is “enough.” Yet some of the most impactful leaders view generosity differently. Rather than treating giving as the final chapter of success, they see it as part of the journey itself.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mirza supported educational institutions, community organizations, charitable causes, and initiatives designed to strengthen Muslim communities. His work serves as a reminder that prosperity is not measured solely by what we accumulate, but also by what we contribute.

A meaningful life often involves asking a different question:

Not simply, “What have I achieved?”

But rather, “Who benefited because I was here?”

Happiness Is Rooted in Purpose

Perhaps the most compelling lesson from Dr. Mirza’s journey is that happiness and purpose are deeply connected.

Many people spend years chasing happiness as a destination. They believe fulfillment will arrive after the promotion, the business launch, the financial milestone, or the next major accomplishment.

Yet those achievements often provide only temporary satisfaction.

Lasting contentment tends to come from something deeper: living according to your values, contributing to something meaningful, maintaining strong relationships, and aligning your daily actions with your long-term purpose.

When faith provides direction, success creates opportunities, and service gives those opportunities meaning, a more balanced and fulfilling life becomes possible.

Building a Legacy That Lasts

Careers eventually end. Businesses change. Markets fluctuate. What endures is the impact we leave behind.

Dr. Yaqub Mirza’s life offers a powerful example of what can happen when professional excellence is combined with faith, generosity, and a commitment to serving others. His story reminds us that success is not merely about reaching personal goals. It’s about using our talents, resources, and opportunities to create lasting value for our families, communities, and future generations.

In a world that often encourages people to choose between faith, success, and happiness, Dr. Mirza’s journey suggests that the most meaningful life may be one that thoughtfully pursues all three.

In Memory of Dr. Yaqub Mirza

Since this conversation was recorded, Dr. M. Yaqub Mirza passed away on December 3, 2025, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of faith, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and institution-building. He was 78 years old.

For decades, Dr. Mirza played a pivotal role in advancing Islamic finance, supporting educational initiatives, and strengthening Muslim institutions throughout North America and beyond. A physicist by training, he dedicated much of his life to helping build organizations that would empower future generations through ethical investing, financial literacy, scholarship, and community development.

His influence can be seen not only in the organizations he helped establish and support, but in the countless individuals he mentored along the way. Colleagues and community leaders consistently described him as a visionary builder, a generous philanthropist, and a person who approached success with humility and purpose.

At UIF, we were honored to benefit from his leadership, wisdom, and commitment to faith-based finance. His belief that financial success should be aligned with ethical values helped shape an industry that continues to provide Muslims with alternatives rooted in their faith.

As you read the lessons shared in this conversation, we invite you to reflect not only on Dr. Mirza’s accomplishments, but also on the principles that guided his life: faith, service, generosity, and a commitment to creating opportunities for others.

May Allah (SWT) have mercy on Dr. Yaqub Mirza, accept his good deeds, forgive his shortcomings, and grant him the highest ranks in Jannatul Firdaus. May his legacy continue to benefit generations to come through the institutions he built, the knowledge he shared, and the lives he touched. Ameen.
