What would you ask a successful attorney if you had an hour of their time?

Legal issues are often something people don’t think about until they’re forced to. Whether it’s creating a will, navigating a car accident, protecting assets, or making important career decisions, the right advice before a problem arises can save significant time, money, and stress later.

On a recent episode of the UIF Community Podcast, we sat down with Furqan Mohammed, practicing attorney and founder of MST Law in Chicago, to discuss his journey from law school to private practice, lessons learned throughout his career, and practical advice that applies to professionals and families alike.

Building a Career Through Specialization

Many young professionals enter the workforce believing they need to be good at everything. Furqan shared a different perspective.

After graduating from law school and beginning his career as an attorney at a large international law firm, he observed that the most successful and fulfilled attorneys weren’t necessarily the ones working the longest hours. Instead, they had become known for something specific. They developed expertise in a niche area and became the person clients sought out when they needed help.

This realization eventually influenced his decision to launch his own practice in 2017. Today, his firm has built a reputation in several specialized areas, including Islamic estate planning, personal injury litigation, and taxi medallion-related cases.

His story serves as a reminder that developing deep expertise can often create more opportunities than trying to be everything to everyone.

What Young Professionals Often Get Wrong About Success

One of the more interesting discussions centered around career development and the qualities that help individuals stand out in competitive industries.

While hard work, integrity, and empathy remain essential traits, Furqan highlighted another skill that is becoming increasingly important: critical thinking.

In a world dominated by short-form content, social media clips, and constant information overload, many people consume information quickly but rarely take the time to analyze it deeply. Furqan encouraged young professionals to slow down, evaluate facts from multiple perspectives, and develop the ability to think through complex issues before reaching conclusions.

He also emphasized the importance of conducting regular self-assessments throughout your career. Rather than simply staying busy, professionals should periodically evaluate whether they are growing, learning, and moving toward their long-term goals.

As he explained, many people spend years running faster on the same treadmill without ever stopping to determine whether they’re headed in the right direction.

Why Estate Planning Isn’t Just for Retirees

One of the most valuable parts of the conversation focused on estate planning, an area that many families delay addressing until much later in life.

According to Furqan, estate planning is not simply about distributing wealth after death. At its core, it’s about creating a plan for everything you own and everything you owe. Without proper planning, families can find themselves navigating probate court, lengthy legal proceedings, unexpected expenses, and unnecessary complications during an already difficult time.

For Muslim families, estate planning can be even more important because Islamic inheritance principles contain specific guidelines regarding how assets should be distributed. Proper planning can help ensure those wishes are carried out while also complying with state laws.

Perhaps most importantly, Furqan stressed that estate planning isn’t reserved for wealthy individuals. Young couples purchasing their first home, starting a family, or building assets should consider having at least a basic estate plan in place. As their financial situation evolves, that plan can evolve as well.

The Car Accident Advice Everyone Should Follow

As an attorney who regularly handles personal injury cases, Furqan has seen countless situations where determining fault becomes the central challenge.

His advice was surprisingly simple: invest in a dash camera.

While many drivers assume they’ll never need one, a dash cam can provide objective evidence when accidents occur. In cases where stories conflict, witnesses disagree, or language barriers create confusion, video footage can quickly establish what actually happened.

Furqan shared examples of situations where dash cam footage immediately changed the outcome of a case and eliminated disputes over liability.

Considering the relatively low cost of today’s devices, it’s a small investment that can provide significant protection.

Lessons From High-Profile Legal Cases

The conversation also explored several notable cases that Furqan has been involved with throughout his career.

One involved the collapse of the taxi medallion market, which left many hardworking drivers burdened with overwhelming debt after the arrival of rideshare services dramatically changed the transportation industry. Furqan discussed how his firm helped drivers navigate foreclosures, debt restructuring, and bankruptcy proceedings during that difficult period.

Another discussion focused on the tragic case involving social media personality Sania Khan. While respecting the ongoing legal process, Furqan explained how civil litigation often seeks answers beyond criminal accountability. In cases involving catastrophic loss, families frequently want to understand not only what happened, but whether steps could have been taken to prevent it.

These cases highlight how legal representation often extends beyond courtrooms and settlements. At its best, it can help families find answers, hold institutions accountable, and encourage meaningful changes that improve safety for others.

Furqan Mohammed’s insights offered a valuable reminder that legal planning, professional growth, and personal development are often more connected than we realize. The decisions we make today – whether in our careers, finances, or family planning – can have lasting effects for years to come.
